Fame and Fortune

Thoughts of an Elvis Presley Fan

Behind those ornate iron gates
A beautiful mansion stands,
The man who lived there was called 'The King'
By fans from many lands.
He was a king of music and song,
He had no royal throne,
He ruled the pop charts with songs of love
But in his heart he was alone.

Although he had companions there
Who passed the time away,
The woman who became his wife
Felt she could not stay
Inside that beautiful mansion
With gold discs wall-to-wall,
And gates that would not open
To the fans who tried to call.

Now in the mansion garden
Laid to rest by his parents' side,
Fans at last can try to show
The affection he was denied.

If you dream of fame and fortune,
And hope it will come to you,
Remember that there are some things
That it cannot do.
It can't replace the smile of your child
Or the loving arms of your wife,
Fortune and fame are worth nothing at all
If you have no love in your life.
