Our hymns tell us of the love Of Our Father up above. Standing to sing in church, I could see A perfect example in front of me. A father and his son were there, The boy was young and free from care. He held the hymn book up with pride For his father who stood at his side. Around his son's shoulders he slipped his arm, As if protecting the boy from harm. As they sang together, side by side, Such a beautiful sight, I almost cried. The boy's bright smile, his dad's tender look Said more than all the hymns in that book About a father's precious love, Whether on earth or up above. |
Note: I wrote this poem in 1995. My friend and I were invited by Tony Wyn-Jones to his Baptismal ceremony. Amongst his many friends and family was his wife Glenys and their youngest son Jonathan, who was then eight years old. There was a moment when father and son stood together which inspired this poem. Three years later we also attended Jonathan's own baptism. Sadly Jonathan passed away on February 21, 2007. |
